Aconcagua

The 6,962-meter-high Aconcagua is one of the highest peaks in the world, the highest outside Asia. Mount Aconcagua is located in the province of Mendoza, in western Argentina. Its name derives from an indigenous word meaning "Stone Sentinel". The area was originally inhabited by different pre-colombian peoples. Among other things, the momified body of a native boy was discovered in 1985 at 5,000 meters above sea level, a mute witness of times bygone.

The first European to successfully reach the Aconcagua peak was a Swiss named Mathías Zurbriggen. He reached the highest point on Mt. Aconcagua on 14 January 1897, following the northwest trail (normal route) which has become the most popular path to Aconcagua's top.

Over the years, the number of expeditions arriving at Mt. Aconcagua Provincial Park, eager to face the challenge of height, strong winds and extreme temperatures, have increased steadily, making it one of the most popular destinations among mountain climbers the world around. Mt. Aconcagua is part of the "seven summits" circuit

2005 was our most successful season ever on Aconcagua...
